Spanish Grammar Foundations #2: Articles

Articles are words used to indicate the gender and number of nouns. There are two types of articles in Spanish: definite articles (el, la, los, las) and indefinite articles (un, una, unos, unas).

Definite articles are used to refer to something specific, while indefinite articles are used to talk about something in general or not specific.

For example:

El libro (The book) refers to a specific book.

Un libro (A book) refers to any book in general.

Here is a list of definite and indefinite articles in Spanish:

Definite Articles:

El (masculine singular) La (feminine singular) Los (masculine plural) Las (feminine plural)

Indefinite Articles:

Un (masculine singular) Una (feminine singular) Unos (masculine plural) Unas (feminine plural)

It is important to note that in Spanish, articles must agree in gender and number with the noun they refer to.

Now it's your turn to practice! Take some nearby objects and try to identify their gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural), and then use the correct article to describe them in a sentence.

Then, check out this short video I recorded on this grammar topic.

See you tomorrow for the next day of Spanish Grammar Foundations!

Saludos cordiales,

Levi “EL Profesor” Flint
